Toboggan Championships

February 26, 2019

Hey Y’all,

This past weekend, my parents and I took a journey up to northern Maine to check out the Toboggan Championships. Yes, apparently this is a legit championship race that a lot of New Englander’s participate in!

The race:

The championship was a weekend long event that took place in the beautiful coastal town of Camden, Maine. I learned a lot about the sporting event. I even got to see the behind the scenes aspect of what goes into this kind of race.

The taboggan-ers lubed up their toboggan’s with different kinds of waxes. They had wheels on the side of their sleds. This was to help them go faster when hitting the side of the slide.

The way that the people on the toboggan positioned themselves while sliding down, each racer had a different approach. They were timed and that is how they determined who won. There were several different categories like two, three, and four person teams, experimental teams, and even a fastest student team!

The event:

The event itself was lined with eager participants and awaiting onlookers. There were fire pits all over and warming huts on the frozen lake. There were also food trucks and they were serving hot beverages and comfort food. My personal favorite was the two different kinds of beer tents! There were a lot of different toboggans at the event. Some small, some tall, and some with different colors! They even gave out toboggan trophies! The weather was freezing so we didn’t stay that long, but it was surely an event that I will remember!

After an hour, we were getting cold and hungry so we set out in search of food. We settled on one of our favorite restaurants, the Sea Dog Brewing Company. While we were waiting for brunch, I took myself on a tour of their dining area. I was pleased to find some really cool pictures!

My thoughts…

If you are in the New England area, you should consider coming to Camden for the US National Toboggan Championships next February! It’s a weekend long event so it would make the perfect getaway while being able to see the charming coastal town of Camden! There is also plenty of skiing nearby and great places to eat!
